iPhone Maintains US Lead Despite Slow Growth in Latest comScore Report

Technology research firm comScore released its latest U.S. smartphone market report today, covering the past three months through May. The results showed slow growth for Apple, which still dominates the smartphone market despite increased competition from Samsung, but showed that Google's Android operating system slightly increased its lead over iOS in the past few months.

Out of 141 million smartphone owners in the country, 39.2 percent carry an iPhone (up 0.3 percentage points from comScore's last report in February). Meanwhile, Samsung saw a 1.7 percentage point market gain for a total of 23 percent of U.S. smartphones. Rounding out the top five in descending order were HTC, Motorola and LG, which each saw slight losses in market share.

Meanwhile, Android maintained its majority market share for smartphone mobile platforms, jumping 0.7 percentage points from 51.7 percent to 52.4 percent of the market. Apple's iOS held on in second place, although CEO Tim Cook argued at WWDC 2013 that iOS 6 is actually the most used platform, far ahead of the most-used Android iteration. BlackBerry, Microsoft and Symbian rounded out the top five with 4.8, 3 and 0.4 percent of the market, respectively.
